If your child’s braces bracket becomes loose or breaks, don’t worry. What you should do next depends on whether the bracket is still attached to the wire, has come completely off the wire, or is one of the upper or lower four front brackets. At Stellar Smiles Ortho, most broken brackets are handled with a COMFORT visit within a week, while a broken bracket on one of the upper or lower four front teeth should receive a COMFORT visit as soon as possible.
What If the Bracket Is Loose but Still Attached to the Wire?
If the bracket has come loose from the tooth but is still attached to the orthodontic wire, it may move or rotate on the wire.
If the loose bracket has rotated and is sticking out:
- Use sterile tweezers to gently slide or rotate the bracket along the wire until it is in a more comfortable position.
- Cover the area with orthodontic wax if needed to prevent irritation.
Then contact Stellar Smiles Ortho.
Schedule a COMFORT visit at one of our designated times within a week.
What If the Bracket Comes Completely Off the Wire?
If the bracket has broken off and can easily be removed from the mouth, save the bracket.
Place it in a small plastic baggie and bring it with you to Stellar Smiles Ortho.
When the COMFORT visit should be scheduled depends on the location and function of the bracket.
If It Is NOT One of the Upper or Lower Four Front Brackets
Schedule a COMFORT visit at one of our designated times within a week.
This also applies if the bracket is one that is used to attach a rubber band.
If It IS One of the Upper or Lower Four Front Brackets
Schedule a COMFORT visit at one of our designated times as soon as possible.
The location of the broken bracket matters, which is why we encourage parents to contact us rather than simply waiting until the next regular appointment.
What If the Wire Is Poking My Child?
Occasionally, the end of an orthodontic wire can move out of position and begin irritating the inside of the mouth.
First, try using a Q-tip or pencil eraser to gently nudge the wire so it lies flat against the tooth.
If you cannot move the wire into a comfortable position, cover the irritating area with orthodontic relief wax.
If the protruding wire is very bothersome, it can be clipped temporarily.
Place folded tissue or gauze around the area. Using a pair of alcohol-sterilized sharp cuticle cutters or nail clippers, carefully snip off the protruding portion of the wire and catch the clipped piece with the tissue or gauze.
Orthodontic wax may still be helpful afterward.
Schedule a COMFORT visit at one of our designated times within a week.
How Do I Use Orthodontic Wax?
Orthodontic wax can provide a temporary buffer between the braces and the inside of the mouth.
- Pinch off a small piece of wax and roll it into a ball approximately the size of a small pea.
- Dry the brace and wire first.
- Flatten the wax and place it completely over the area causing irritation.
If a small amount of orthodontic wax is accidentally swallowed, don’t worry. Orthodontic wax is harmless.
Should I Try to Glue the Bracket Back On?
No.
Do not use household glue, super glue, or another adhesive to try to rebond the bracket yourself.
If the bracket is still on the wire, make it comfortable using the instructions above and orthodontic wax as needed.
If it has completely come off, save it in a plastic baggie and bring it with you.
Our team will take care of the orthodontic repair.
Is a Broken Bracket a True Emergency?
Most orthodontic problems are not true medical emergencies, although they can certainly be uncomfortable and need attention.
That’s why Stellar Smiles Ortho uses different scheduling categories depending on the problem.
A loose bracket that is still attached to the wire generally receives a COMFORT visit within a week.
A bracket that has come completely off generally receives a COMFORT visit within a week, except when it involves one of the upper or lower four front teeth, in which case the COMFORT visit should be scheduled as soon as possible.
Will a Broken Bracket Delay Orthodontic Treatment?
A broken bracket does not automatically mean treatment will be delayed.
However, brackets are part of the system Dr. J uses to apply controlled orthodontic forces and move the teeth according to the treatment plan.
A bracket that is no longer attached to the tooth cannot perform its intended function properly.
Repeated breakage or leaving an orthodontic problem unaddressed can interfere with treatment progress.
The sooner we know there is a problem, the sooner we can determine what needs to be done.
What If My Child Swallows Part of the Braces or Appliance?
This is different from an ordinary loose or broken bracket.
If a brace, appliance, or wire is swallowed, stay calm and go to the local Emergency Room.
Obtain a written report and X-rays from the Emergency Room and bring them to Stellar Smiles Ortho.
A COMFORT visit with our office should then be scheduled within a week.
What If I’m Not Sure What Broke?
That’s okay.
Parents aren’t expected to know the names of every part of braces or determine which type of orthodontic repair is needed.
If something is loose, broken, poking, or uncomfortable, contact Stellar Smiles Ortho and tell us what you’re seeing.
Our team can help determine the appropriate next step and how quickly your child should be seen.
The Bottom Line
If your child’s bracket breaks, what happens next depends on where the bracket is and whether it is still attached to the wire.
If the bracket is loose but still on the wire, make it comfortable with sterile tweezers and orthodontic wax if needed, and schedule a COMFORT visit within a week.
If the bracket comes completely off, save it in a plastic baggie and contact us.
If it is one of the upper or lower four front brackets, schedule a COMFORT visit as soon as possible.
