At What Age Should My Child First See an Orthodontist?

At Stellar Smiles Ortho, we recommend a child’s first orthodontic evaluation around age 6.

Age 6 is an important time to begin evaluating how your child’s permanent teeth, bite, jaws, and face are developing. Children don’t all develop on the same timetable, and we are seeing some children reach important stages of dental and physical development at younger ages.

An evaluation at age 6 allows Dr. J to establish an early baseline, identify developing concerns, and determine whether your child should simply be monitored or whether Interceptive Treatment may be beneficial.

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children receive their first orthodontic checkup no later than age 7. At Stellar Smiles Ortho, we prefer to begin around age 6.

Why Does Stellar Smiles Ortho Recommend Age 6?

By age 6, important changes may already be underway.

The first permanent molars and front teeth may be erupting. The bite is changing. The jaws and face are growing. And the transition from baby teeth to permanent teeth has begun.

Because children are developing at different rates and some are reaching these developmental stages earlier Dr. J believes there is value in seeing a child around age 6 rather than automatically waiting until age 7.

Earlier evaluation does not mean earlier treatment. It means earlier awareness.

If everything is developing normally, wonderful. We can continue to monitor your child’s growth and development.

If we identify something that deserves attention, we can determine whether there is an advantage to addressing it while your child is growing or whether waiting is the better choice.

We would rather identify a developing issue early and choose to wait than discover it later and wish we had been watching it sooner.

What Does Dr. J Evaluate at Age 6?

An orthodontic evaluation at age 6 is about much more than whether your child’s teeth look straight.

Dr. J evaluates how your child’s teeth, bite, jaws, and face are developing, including:

  • How the permanent teeth are erupting
  • Space available for developing permanent teeth
  • Crowding and spacing
  • Crossbites, overbites, and underbites
  • Upper and lower jaw development
  • Width and development of the upper jaw and palate
  • Facial growth and symmetry
  • Early or delayed loss of baby teeth
  • Oral habits that may affect growth and development

We may also ask about things you notice at home, including mouth breathing, snoring, or nighttime teeth grinding. These observations can provide additional information about your child’s development and may indicate that further evaluation is appropriate.

The goal is to understand how your child is developing not simply how straight the teeth look today.

Does an Evaluation at Age 6 Mean My Child Will Need Treatment?

Every child is different.

For many children, Dr. J may simply recommend continued observation as the permanent teeth erupt and the jaws and face continue to develop.

For others, the evaluation may identify a developing problem where Interceptive Treatment could be beneficial while growth is occurring.

Interceptive Treatment is not about treating every child as early as possible. It is about recognizing specific problems where intervening during growth may offer an advantage.

And orthodontic treatment for younger children has evolved.

Depending on your child’s individual needs and stage of development, today’s options may include Invisalign First, an expander, other orthodontic appliances, or a combination of approaches.

Invisalign First, in particular, surprises many parents. It was designed specifically for growing children who still have a combination of baby and permanent teeth.

The right approach depends on the child and the problem we are trying to address.

The diagnosis comes first. The appliance comes second.

Why Not Wait Until All the Permanent Teeth Come In?

Because the first orthodontic evaluation isn’t simply about straightening permanent teeth.

It is also about growth and development.

Waiting until every baby tooth has fallen out may mean missing years during which Dr. J could have been observing how the bite, jaws, permanent teeth, and face were developing.

That does not mean treatment would have been necessary during those years.

It means we would have been watching the development as it happened.

That distinction is important.

The Bottom Line

At Stellar Smiles Ortho, we recommend your child’s first orthodontic evaluation around age 6.

We begin at age 6 because children develop at different rates, and important changes in the permanent teeth, bite, jaws, and face may already be underway.

With 27 years of orthodontic experience, Dr. J’s goal is not to treat children as early as possible.

The goal is to recognize developing concerns early and treat at the right time.

Sometimes that means continued observation.

Sometimes Interceptive Treatment can be beneficial.

And when treatment is appropriate, today’s children have options including Invisalign First.

The first step is understanding how your child is growing.
