No. You do not need a referral from your dentist to schedule an orthodontic consultation at Stellar Smiles Ortho. Parents can contact us directly for their child, and teenagers and adults can also schedule an orthodontic evaluation without first being referred by a general dentist.
Your dentist is an important part of your dental healthcare team, but you don’t have to wait for your dentist to suggest an orthodontic evaluation if you have questions or concerns about your teeth, your child’s developing smile, or the bite.
Does My Child Need a Dentist Referral to See an Orthodontist?
No.
Parents can schedule an orthodontic evaluation directly with Stellar Smiles Ortho.
This can be particularly important for younger children because orthodontists evaluate much more than whether the permanent teeth are coming in straight.
Dr. J evaluates the developing teeth, bite, jaws, dental arches, tooth eruption, available space, and facial growth.
At Stellar Smiles Ortho, we recommend a child’s first orthodontic evaluation around age 6.
That doesn’t mean treatment will begin at age 6.
Earlier evaluation does not mean earlier treatment. It means earlier awareness.
What If My Dentist Hasn’t Mentioned Orthodontics?
You can still schedule an orthodontic consultation.
General dentists and orthodontists have different roles, and an orthodontic evaluation focuses specifically on the development and relationship of the teeth, bite, and jaws.
Your dentist may recognize an orthodontic concern and recommend an evaluation, but parents and patients can also seek an orthodontic opinion directly.
If something about your child’s bite, tooth eruption, crowding, spacing, or jaw development concerns you, you don’t need to wait for someone else to suggest an orthodontic evaluation.
Can Adults See an Orthodontist Without a Referral?
Yes.
Adults can contact Stellar Smiles Ortho directly to discuss orthodontic concerns such as:

What Happens at the Orthodontic Consultation?
The purpose of the consultation is to understand your individual orthodontic condition before recommending treatment.
Dr. J evaluates the teeth, bite, jaw relationships, and other factors that may affect orthodontic treatment.
At Stellar Smiles Ortho, our diagnostic records include a Panoramic X-ray (Panorex) and a Lateral Cephalometric X-ray (profile X-ray).
We also digitally scan every patient with an iTero scanner, which creates a detailed 3D model of the teeth and bite.
Together, the clinical examination, X-rays, and digital scan provide Dr. J with a comprehensive picture of the patient’s orthodontic condition.
What If My Dentist Has Already Taken a Panorex?
If your dental provider has taken a Panoramic X-ray (Panorex) within the last 6 months, please provide it to our office.
We can use that Panorex rather than taking another one.
If the Panorex was taken more than 6 months ago, we will take a new Panorex as part of our diagnostic records.
The Lateral Cephalometric X-ray (profile X-ray) and iTero digital scan are also part of our orthodontic diagnostic evaluation.
Will My Dentist Still Be Involved If I See an Orthodontist?
Yes.
Seeing an orthodontist does not replace regular dental care.
Patients should continue seeing their general dentist for routine dental examinations, cleanings, preventive care, and other dental needs during orthodontic treatment.
Your dentist and orthodontist have different but complementary roles in maintaining your oral health.
What About Dental Insurance?
You do not need a referral to schedule an orthodontic consultation at Stellar Smiles Ortho.
Dental insurance plans can have different orthodontic benefits, limitations, networks, and coverage requirements.
Our team can help you understand your orthodontic benefits and estimated coverage before treatment begins.
Although our office does not require a referral, certain insurance plans may have their own referral or authorization requirements for coverage.
When Should My Child First See an Orthodontist?
At Stellar Smiles Ortho, we recommend a child’s first orthodontic evaluation around age 6.
Children don’t all develop on exactly the same timetable. By this age, Dr. J can begin evaluating important aspects of dental and facial development and establish a baseline for future growth.
An evaluation at age 6 does not mean treatment will be recommended.
Sometimes Dr. J recommends continued observation.
Sometimes a developing concern should be monitored.
And sometimes Interceptive Treatment may provide an advantage while the child is growing.
The goal is to recognize developing concerns early and treat at the right time.
When Should Teenagers or Adults Schedule an Orthodontic Consultation?
Teenagers and adults can schedule whenever they have questions or concerns about:
- Tooth alignment
- Crowding or spacing
- Their bite
- Invisalign
- Braces
- Teeth that have shifted after previous orthodontic treatment
- Other orthodontic concerns
You don’t need to wait until a problem becomes severe—and you don’t need to wait for a referral.
