Yes. Today’s Invisalign treatment for growing children goes beyond simply straightening teeth with clear aligners. Depending on your child’s needs, treatment may include Invisalign First aligners, the Invisalign Palatal Expander (IPE), or a combination of the two.
This is important because not all children need the same type of expansion.
Invisalign First can be used in appropriately selected children to develop the dental arches, create space for erupting permanent teeth, address crowding, and correct certain developing bite problems.
For children who need skeletal expansion of the upper jaw, the Invisalign Palatal Expander (IPE) provides another option. IPE is a removable, digitally designed expansion system created specifically to widen the upper jaw in growing patients.
This means the conversation is no longer simply:
“Invisalign or an expander?”
Today, Invisalign itself can be part of the expansion treatment.
What Is Invisalign First?
Many parents are surprised to learn that Invisalign isn’t just for teenagers and adults.
Invisalign First was designed specifically for growing children who still have a combination of baby and permanent teeth, a stage known as mixed dentition.
Interceptive Treatment at this age is often about much more than straightening teeth. Depending on the child’s needs, we may be trying to create space for permanent teeth, develop the dental arches, address crowding, improve the bite, and guide erupting teeth into more favorable positions.
Invisalign First gives Dr. J another way to accomplish some of these goals using clear, removable aligners.
Can Invisalign First Expand a Child’s Dental Arch?
Yes. In appropriately selected children, Invisalign First can be used to develop and expand the dental arches.
The aligners can be designed to gradually move teeth and develop the arch while simultaneously addressing other orthodontic concerns.
But there is an important distinction:
Dental arch expansion and skeletal expansion of the upper jaw are not necessarily the same thing.
That distinction is one reason a proper orthodontic diagnosis is so important.
What Is the Invisalign Palatal Expander (IPE)?
The Invisalign Palatal Expander, or IPE, expands what Invisalign technology can offer growing children.
IPE is designed for growing patients who need expansion of the upper jaw or palate.
Rather than using a traditional fixed metal expander, IPE uses a series of custom-made, digitally designed expanders that progressively widen the palate according to the child’s treatment plan.
For the right patient, this gives Dr. J another option when skeletal expansion—not simply tooth movement or dental arch development—is needed.
Can IPE and Invisalign First Be Used Together?
Yes. Depending on the child’s orthodontic needs, IPE and Invisalign First may be used as different parts of an overall Interceptive Treatment plan.
For example, a child may first require palatal expansion and then benefit from Invisalign First to address tooth position, available space, arch development, or the bite.
The exact sequence and treatment plan depend on the individual child’s development.
Does Every Child Need Expansion?
No. And not every child who needs expansion needs the same type of expansion.
Dr. J evaluates the child’s:
- Upper and lower jaw development
- Palatal and arch width
- Bite
- Available space for permanent teeth
- Crowding
- Tooth eruption
- Facial growth
- Stage of dental development
That evaluation determines what needs to be corrected before we decide how to correct it.
Invisalign First, IPE or Another Approach?
At Stellar Smiles Ortho, we don’t begin with:
“Which appliance should we use?”
We begin with:
“What does this child need?”
Depending on the diagnosis, Dr. J may recommend:
- Invisalign First for appropriate dental arch development and tooth movement
- Invisalign Palatal Expander (IPE) when palatal expansion is indicated
- IPE followed by Invisalign First
- Another orthodontic approach when it better fits the child’s needs
- Or continued observation when treatment is not yet necessary
The diagnosis comes first. The technology comes second.
The Bottom Line
Can kids use Invisalign instead of an expander? Sometimes—but today’s answer is more interesting than a simple yes or no.
Invisalign treatment for children now includes both Invisalign First clear aligners and the Invisalign Palatal Expander.
Invisalign First can help develop the dental arches and address tooth position, space, crowding, and certain bite problems.
When a growing child requires palatal expansion, IPE may provide an Invisalign-based expansion option.
The right treatment depends on what your child actually needs.
Could Invisalign First or IPE Be an Option for Your Child?
If your child has been told they may need an expander—or you would like to know whether Invisalign First or the Invisalign Palatal Expander could be appropriate—we invite you to schedule an evaluation with Dr. J at Stellar Smiles Ortho.
With more than 27 years of orthodontic experience, Dr. J can evaluate your child’s growth, bite, jaw development, available space, and tooth eruption and explain the Interceptive Treatment options available.
